Bringing Job Skills and Hope to Syrian Refugees

The current refugee crisis is the greatest humanitarian disaster since WWII.  Amid hope for reduced strife, dislocations from the civil war in Syria continues. Over 3 million Syrians have found temporary safe havens inside Lebanon. By recent count, 1.6 million refugees are captive in the camps set up by the UN refugee agency.

They cannot go home; they cannot leave Lebanon. Many are paralyzed by past trauma, poverty, illiteracy and lack of resources. A few international relief agencies, such as the UN refugee agency and UNICEF, provide basic survival kits. Refugees quickly become dependent on hand-outs as that is all they have as a means to survive.

Having spent 9 years in waiting, their hope for being treated like human beings is almost out. "Children here are asking questions like even animals have rights but we have none. Why so?" The personal trauma that these people have gone through is beyond comprehension.

Walid’s Fund, a registered 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, serves people, refugees living in crisis. We surveyed and identified seven camps in South Lebanon that are “aid deserts,” places by-passed by the major international relief agencies. We provide vocational training to the refugees to help them be self-reliant.

Our Mission: "Be the Change"
To See the Change, Be the Change

Our goal is to inspire hope by developing practical occupational skills among the adults. With skills, individuals and groups can help each other and begin to earn money by selling services and crafts. Occupational skills bring income and hope for a stable future. Skills bring new confidence in individuals and families. Our remedy is simple, original and is making a difference. Practical job skills across a range of occupations, each with the potential to improve circumstances for the families now prepare them for the hoped-for return to their homes in Syria. We tap innate talent and skills and promote self-reliance and new enterprises within the camps. We believe human spirit is resilient, powerful and positive even amid great suffering.
